Patrick Star

Since the cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants first went on air, aside from the occasional double entendre, the show has been regarded as  relatively “clean” and safe for children of all ages. In fact, the main character, SpongeBob SquarePants, is the epitome of innocence. Patrick Star, SpongeBob’s best friend, has also been considered cuddly and innocent throughout the years, but recent memes on twitter have revealed the darker side of the pink starfish.

Savage Patrick, also referred to as Evil Patrick or Angry Patrick, is the newest SpongeBob SquarePants meme to grace the Internet. The meme is a still shot of Patrick Star from an episode titled “Nature Pants” in season one of the ever-meme-savvy children’s cartoon. The still began its journey to becoming a popular meme on February 26th of this year, when twitter user @bvercetti_ posted the shot from the episode, and received over 18,000 likes and 4,600 retweets.

Since its initial exposure to the internet, the use of the image in memes spread like wildfire. The meme is coupled with avant-garde, or in Internet terms, “edgy” captions, which are often vulgar or inappropriate. Despite this, the meme has already lead to the creation of a subgroup of Savage Patrick memes with cleaner captions such as “Me kicking ice under the fridge” and “Aww, the plans are canceled? I really wanted to go. Maybe next time…”

In addition to its expanding use as a captioned meme, the still image of Patrick Star has also become a Photoshop favorite and has already been photo shopped and merged with various other images and memes.

The newly-famous meme is sure to gain even more recognition in the future, but if you have any memes that you think should be recognized, please feel free to contact me at snyderk3@mail.uc.edu.
