Gold Medal Memes

Every year, the Olympics reveal various new athletically talented individuals in numerous sports and divisions. In addition to bringing distinction to competitors for their athletic ability, the Olympics often inadvertently also bring fame to countless other athletes in the form of memes.

The 2018 Winter Olympics brought forth the return of the Tongan Flag Bearer. The aforementioned flag bearer originally became a meme during the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics when Pita Taufatofua, who was competing in Tae Kwon Do that year, strode into the stadium covered head to toe in shiny oil and wearing only a ta’ovala (a traditional Tongan mat worn around the waist). This year, Taufatofua made another appearance in similar traditional garb, only this time he stood in twenty-eight degree weather as a competitor in cross country skiing.

Also during these winter Olympics, Chloe Kim became the youngest woman to win a snowboarding medal when she won gold in women’s snowboarding halfpipe at the age of seventeen. Despite being such a uniquely talented individual, she managed to become one of the most relatable Olympic gold medalists of all time after tweeting about being hungry while she was between half-pipe runs. Her tweets read as follows: “Could be down for some ice cream rn [right now]” and “Wish I finished my breakfast sandwich but my stubborn self decided not to and now I’m getting hangry.” Later she tweeted, “I’m so hungry!” immediately followed by “Oh and I also had 2 churros today and they were pretty bomb so if you ever get nervous go eat a churro.”
